Expansion
Plans
A
Service/Learning Project
aimed
at ensuring the attainment of the
KISD
Mission Statement
Kopperl
ISD is dedicated to providing its students with a sound
background in the basic skills, instilling a sense of personal
worth, and providing educational experiences that encourage
students to achieve their full potential. At the same time we
strive to prepare the students to assume the roles necessary to
become contributing, productive, and responsible citizens.
What
is Service Learning?
· An instructional method that integrates community service
with classroom instruction.
· A way of teaching that enhances the curriculum to make it
more meaningful and relevant to students.
· An experiential teaching and learning method in which
students apply knowledge and skills learned in the classroom to
real life situations.
· Learning with a clear purpose that connects students’
interests to solving problems and meeting real issues in the
community.
In
other words…
Service
Learning is a teaching and learning approach that integrates
community service with academic study to enrich learning, teach
civic responsibility, and strengthen communities.
Service learning
can be guided towards effectiveness using a 5-point method known
as STARS.
· Student
Initiative
Students determine the community need or local problem to be
addressed, then design, plan, and implement the project.
· Thoughtful
Service
The project provides ongoing service that benefits the students,
the school, and the community.
· Authentic
Learning
Students develop and reinforce valuable skills through
participating in the project.
· Reflective Practice
Student reflection acknowledges
successes, identifies
opportunities for
improvement,
and
outlines next steps
through written, verbal,
and visual forms.
· Sustainable
Partnerships
The community is strengthened by meaningful partnerships between
students, teachers, organizations, businesses, and community
members.
Why
do Service Learning?
Research
indicates that quality Service Learning programs can:
· Improve academic achievement and reduce risky behavior
· Increase scores on the state basic skills tests
· Increase attendance
· Increase classroom participation and improve problem
solving skills
· Increase positive and respectful relationships with peers
and teachers
· Promote a commitment to service, now and later in life
· Promote the development of committed citizens
In
the School year 2002-2003 the Senior Class built a
24’ X 30’ covered pavilion with 2-20’ picnic tables as
their Senior Legacy Project.
The
2003 - 2004 added an outdoor
Basketball
Pavilion.
The
2005-2006 Senior Class added a stage/auditorium to one end of the
Basketball Pavilion and a fence around the perimeter of the
park.
The
projects for the 2005-2006 School Year included: sidewalks,
brick underpinning beneath the stage and steps, as well as a
12-12' extension to the Picnic Pavilion with a large brick
barbecue pit.
The
2006-2007 senior class painted a patriotic mural on the sides of
the well house the High School Ag. classes built. The Art and
Family and Consumer Science classes transplanted native flowers
into the boxes that were built by the Spanish classes.
The
2007 senior class also built a larger flower box and planted
annuals that were donated by community members Cyndi and Duane
Hutson, as well as senior Kameron Kemp, and community partner
Ace Hardware of Meridian.
This
year, the 2007-2008 plans are to add nature and fitness trails
as well as a hedgerow and information center on the Corps of
Engineer's Legacy Park expansion property.
